Dr. Susann O. Smith, DVM, MPHInfluenced by her dad's horses and family dogs, Dr. Susann declared her desire to become a veterinarian at 8 years of age, while a student at West Pembroke Primary School, Pembroke Bermuda. Relenting to her persistence, her parents arranged for her to spend one morning at Endsmeet Animal Hospital then serviced by Dr. Robert Steele and later start horse riding lessons at age 12. Both experiences had lasting impact.

She is an alumnus of the prestigious and historical Tuskegee University where she obtained Bachelor of Science degrees (BSc) in Biology and Animal and Poultry Sciences and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. Dr. Susann commenced her career working as the Supernumerary Government Veterinary Officer at the then Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Parks, Bermuda. While there she was a founding member of the Bermuda Dairy Association and the Bermuda Agriculture Group (BAG), a local charity that promotes Bermuda's agricultural heritage. Dr. Susann completed research on African Sleeping Sickness (a zoonotic disease) in Fulani cattle as a visiting researcher at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, West Africa. This practicum was accepted as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Public Health (MPH) at the University of Iowa. |
